How much noise does a generator make?

Dependent upon a number of complex factors, generators may be whisper quiet or louder than a lawnmower. These factors include engine make and model, cooling system type, housing design, muffler type and orientation, engine speed, electrical load, physical location and orientation, and environmental conditions – just to name a few. In most cases, sound-attenuating enclosures are available that can greatly reduce the noise level, and in many cases, render generators virtually silent.
