Custom or off the shelf?

Your answer goes here.

How much does a generator cost?
Asking how much a generator costs is similar to asking how much a car costs. Like automobiles, generators are available in a myriad of configurations with countless options and features to fit virtually every need. Some of the contributing variables include engine size, cooling system type, control system, alternator type, housing type, noise level, fuel source, electrical output, governor type, and voltage regulator design – not to mention quality. That is why it’s important to discuss your specific needs with a Leete Power Specialist who can walk you through the decision process.
How much will my installation cost?
Like generators themselves, installation costs are dependent upon a large number of complex variables. In some cases, it’s possible for the installation to cost more than the generator itself, while in most others it is only a small fraction.
How much power do I need?
The amount of electrical output needed – in essence the “size” of the generator – is primarily based upon how the electrical system is configured with the attached loads. Resistive loads (lights, heaters, computers, etc.), or inductive loads (which will surge because of motors starting; pumps, refrigeration, air conditioning, etc.) need to be taken into account to determine the size of the generator. Please call your Leete Power Specialist for further detail.
Are generators weatherproof?
In general, the answer is, “Yes.” Generators equipped with enclosures are designed to protect internal components from environmental elements such as rain and snow. However, not all weather-protective enclosures are created equal. In addition, it’s important to note that other factors can lead to corrosion or damage, such as salt air from an ocean environment and condensation. Therefore, it’s important to discuss your unique environmental conditions with a knowledgeable Leete Power Specialist.
How much noise does a generator make?
Dependent upon a number of factors, generators may be whisper quiet or louder than a lawnmower. These factors include engine size, fuel type, cooling system type, housing design, muffler type and orientation, engine speed, electrical load, physical location and orientation, and environmental conditions – just to name a few. In most cases, sound-attenuating enclosures are available that can greatly reduce the noise level, and in many cases, render generators virtually silent. Different municipalities require noise level regulations.
What are my local installation regulations?
Based upon your location, any number of local, state, and federal regulations may dictate specific requirements for your installation. These requirements may address generator location, noise level, exhaust production, fuel source location, fuel containment systems, alarm warnings, ventilation, hours of operation, and more. Therefore, it’s important to consult with your local building authority to obtain guidance and any required permits prior to beginning your project.
What upgrades and options are available?
As with any piece of sophisticated equipment, numerous options are available for generator sets.  In some cases, electronic governors may be required to make the unit compatible with computers, entertainment systems, and other sensitive home electronics for frequencey control. To make the buying process easier, we include the most desirable options as “standard” equipment. For example, we provide stainless steel flexible exhaust connectors when available, instead of the usual carbon steel that most retailers supply. In so doing, the life of this key component is more than tripled, thereby reducing maintenance and repair costs, downtime, and inconvenience.
What type of fuel is best for my application?
Typically speaking, generators are available in diesel, gasoline, liquid propane, liquid propane vapor, and natural gas fuel configurations, or a combination of these fuels. The fuel source you chose will depend upon a number of interrelated factors including size of unit, runtime, frequency of use, budget, noise level, aesthetics, and other factors.
How long can I expect my generator to last?
Generator longevity is dependent upon many elements, including make and model, component quality, engine speed, electrical load, operating environment, weather conditions, fuel quality, run speed, maintenance interval, and far too many additional factors to list. Therefore, at one extreme you might expect only a few thousand hours of service, while at the other you may enjoy thousands upon thousands of hours of hassle-free service.
What maintenance does my generator require?
Depending upon the specific generator, maintenance needs may vary greatly. The oil should be changed regularly as recommended by the manufacturer, as well as the air and oil filters, sparkplugs, sparkplug wires, etc. Regular exercise of the unit is essential. And remember, for high-speed generators, each hour of runtime is equivalent to approximately eighty miles on a car.
Safety switch versus transfer switch: What’s the difference?
In simple terms, a transfer switch is designed to operate while subjected to electrical current, while a safety switch is not. Unfortunately, safety switches are still occasionally substituted for transfer switches due to their lower cost. Please note that this practice is substandard and often leads to dangerous arcing, resulting in fire hazards and premature switch failure. Therefore, only true transfer switches with high-speed, low-resistance alloy contactors should be used for standby generator installations.
Automatic or manual: Which system makes more sense?
The type of system that makes the most sense for any given application is based primarily upon the budget and convenience level desired. Automatic systems are slightly more expensive, but operate virtually “hands off,” thereby allowing the user to simply enjoy the convenience of their generator system during power outages. Conversely, manual systems, while usually slightly less expensive, require the owner to shut down the electrical loads, start the generator, transfer the electrical source, and properly step-in the desired loads. Then, once power is restored, the process must be reversed and repeated.
Portable versus home standby: What’s the difference?
In general, home standby systems are enclosed, weather-resistant, sound-attenuated units that are fully automatic. Therefore, they require no intervention during power failures and subsequent power restoration. Conversely, although occasionally used for home standby-type applications, portable generators do not have enclosures or sound attenuation, are designed for construction site use, and require full manual interaction. There is a vast difference between the two, which can be clearly explained to you by your Leete Generators Power Specialist.
How do I choose the generator that’s best for my needs?
The only way to ensure you purchase a generator that truly satisfies your needs, budget, and application is to speak with a generator specialist who isn’t obligated to only one or two manufacturers. At Leete Generators, we stand ready to make your project a simple, stress-free success.
